This is a rare market heirloom that dates back to the mid 1800s. It was very popular but was phased out as long-distance shipping became the norm. This crisphead, cold-hardy lettuce produces large 25-30 cm heads. It is slow to bolt and tolerates moderate heat well. The flavour is sweet in the centre with a touch of bitterness to outer leaves.
